A Proper Fit: 2:00pm October 4th, 2026

The Mendon Historical Society proudly presents a program and book signing entitled “A Proper Fit”, women at work in a city of corsets, presented by Anne Marie Murphy
The city of Worcester was home to almost 130 corset-making businesses from 1860 to 1980 and half of them were owned by women. This book profiles many of these female business owners — including a factory boss. This also follows the history of the corset through those years, an undergarment that was required wearing for many decades and has found a new 21st century life on many red carpet events. As Kathleen Doyle, costume designer, writes, “ it is the story of enterprising women we would have loved to meet for drinks after work.”
The author, Anne Marie Murphy has been a professional researcher for the entertainment industry for over thirty years. This is a fascinating look at corsets and the women who made them, restoring the city’s female corset maker to their proper place. A nagging curiosity led her to this deep dive into a little-documented aspect of the city’s history. She is also the author of the popular coloring book Amazing Women of Worcester.
The program will be presented at the Mendon Senior Center, 64 Providence Street on Sunday, October 4th at 2 p.m. It is suggested that you reserve a space at Mendonhistoricalsociety@gmail.com or by calling Ruth @ 508-244-7849. The program is free but donations are gratefully appreciated.
